Life Skills – Personal Finance for Homeschoolers

Budgets, mortgages, and compound interest. It can make an adult’s head spin, and don’t even get me started on how to teach savings and self-discipline when it comes to finances to the kids.  It can be so overwhelming. But, personal finance for homeschoolers is one of these classes that is so necessary in our society. But all I can remember is thinking “This is so boring!” when I was taking it in high school.  When considering my options for teaching personal finance with my homeschooled kids, it didn’t take long for me to realize that MoneyTime is THE curriculum I want to use with my family.

It’s a gaming platform… no, it’s a curriculum…wait, how’d they do that?

Yep! MoneyTime is a ‘gamified’ curriculum for 10-14-year-olds (although my older kids love it too) that has made our family rethink how we teach personal finance in our homeschool.  There are lessons and activities that earn rewards and there are hands-on activities that involve the parents. This is a perfect setup for teaching practical life skills while giving opportunity for family values and goals to be inserted with each topic.

MoneyTime is a web-based, game-style ‘course’. There are no apps to download. All you need is a tablet or laptop and internet access.

I’ll admit it may sound boring (or maybe just confusing), but I guarantee your kids might fight over their computer time (sorry/not sorry) for their turn.  MoneyTime is that good!

Getting started is super easy. Here’s what your kids do:

  1. Create an account,
  2. Watch an intro video
  3. Begin the financial literacy lessons!

Now parents don’t have to work alongside their kids for successful learning. But….Moneytime knows that homeschoolers often take a family approach to many subjects they want to teach at home. So, parents that want to work alongside their child have access to a printable Homeschool Study Guide for Parents along with a Frequently Asked Questions document.

The study guide offers family-style activities that promote discussion and hands-on learning. We have loved the family study guide approach as it gives just enough structure without being boring and helps support the online learning already accomplished each week.

Are you ready for your homeschooler to learn the key financial principles they need to enter adulthood prepared to make good financial decisions?

Here is what is covered in the MoneyTime online Personal Finance course.

Do you know what topics to cover when teaching financial literacy and personal finance in your homeschool? MoneyTime does! Look at what is included.
