Life Skills for Success – Help Your Teens Thrive!

Voyage life skills activities for success allow teen students to step away from the online environment and bring the skills they have just learned into their world. Activities like creating a purpose statement poster, graphic, or simply just writing it out and hanging it in a prominent place.

Voyage 1: Who I Am

In Who I Am, your student will walk through a step-by-step process that will help them identify their purpose and strengths, build a personal brand to guide them through decision making, establish a vision for their future, set goals to achieve that vision, and then create action steps to make their goals a reality.

Voyage 1 will help students identify their life purpose, personal brand, strengths, short-term and long-term vision, and SMART goals.

Module 1 is excellent in giving high schoolers the focus needed to begin formulating ideas about goals and purpose. Many seniors will be asked to write a personal statement as part of the college application process.   And employers love a clear cover letter that can briefly show you know goals and purpose. The seeds of these types of documents are planted and cultivated in the first module of the Voyage Like Skills course.

Voyage 2 & 3: Career Planning

Using a career profiler, your student will not only learn what careers match up with their personality and interests, but they will also explore how to pursue training and education, build a resume, and participate in a job interview.

Is a nice gentle approach to career & college planning.  High school has so many emotions and decision points. These modules allow students to break things down into manageable chunks to help point them on a path to success defined by their purpose statement and (from Voyage 1), career interests in Voyage 2, and college or university planning in Voyage 3 to allow them to explore the different options ahead.

Voyage 2: Career Planning helps prepare students for their career choice by matching them to careers in an interest profiler. Students will learn how to research careers, write a cover letter and resume, complete a job application, and how to excel in job interviews.

Voyage 3: College Planning teaches students how to research schools, file for financial aid, complete college applications, and prepare for campus life.

With the lessons found in this module, though, your student will learn how to narrow down the college choices, work through the application process, and find financial aid. The module wraps up with guidance on planning out a course schedule and exploring the ins and outs of campus life.

The beginning of each module brings the student back to their profile page where they add to or modify what they have learned about who they are and their plans for the future. Start with an interest profiler to get a sense of job or career options that might be a good fit. Then move on to completing the assignments to fulfill the module and prepare for the module exam.

Voyage 4: Financial Responsibility

But even with a basic understanding of financial concepts, your student can avoid these early mistakes. In this module, your student will explore bank accounts, consider the ins and outs of building credit, process the basics of filing taxes, and learn how to create a budget. They will also consider the pros and cons of student loans.

NO matter your career or college path, finances are for everyone. The module starts with the basics of budgets and bank accounts and moves all the way through to taxes, savings, and even how to read a bill. It’s perfect for helping high schoolers and young adults launch successfully into the next phase of financial independence.

Voyage 4: Financial Responsibility teaches students how to open and manage a bank account, read and pay bills, how interest is calculated, and responsible spending habits.

Voyage 5: Everyday Living

In this module, your student will walk through some of the skills that might be easily missed, such as establishing a healthy lifestyle through good eating, sleeping, and fitness habits or practicing strong communication skills. They will also consider home and auto maintenance as well as skills necessary for travel.

Voyage 5 is all about daily life, personal health, and how to manage a home and vehicle. There are even lessons on travel and communication. This module is probably my favorite because it shows how easily achievable a satisfying quality of life can be.  This, to me, is the foundation that the other courses will stand upon, so it’s actually good that it is last, because it drives home the satisfaction of getting the basics right while moving down the list of decisions and action steps to a solid career or academic institution.

Voyage 5: Everyday Living teaches students about everyday responsibilities including health and safety, doctor’s visits, driver’s licenses, travel, and much, much more!

While the Voyage Life Skills online course is set up to be 1 semester-long it is chock full of resources and intentional ‘rabbit trails’. The motivated and thoughtful student may need an entire year to successfully complete the lessons and the action steps, like applying and getting accepted to the college of their choice; interviewing and getting their perfect job, or even budgeting and saving to live on their own.

So whether your student needs to get moving to get it done, or would rather take time to be introspective and complete each of the soul-searching and career assignments, your high schooler will be set up for a path of success in the next phase of life.

VOYAGE IS AN AFFORDABLE COURSE~ONLY $60/STUDENT FOR ALL 5 MODULES!

4 Reasons to Use Voyage This School Year

My 16-year-old is at the crossroads with all of the various ‘Voyages’  Here are the top 4 things I liked about this course she will be taking in the upcoming school year.

  • I really like the teacher instructions & navigation pdfs.  It helped me balance our daily homeschool routine while keeping lessons focused for my independent teenager.
  • The Voyage Program is a great resource for co-ops! Once your teen has the course, assignments could be set up for weekly round table meetings to discuss learning objectives and work completed in previous weeks.  Then, during the week, students complete the lessons on the Voyage platform.
  • I really appreciate the closed captioning option for those that are not strong auditory learners. Just seeing the words often helps students focus better.
  • The platform is SUPER easy for students to use. Almost too easy as they navigate the platform.  Critical thinking and gamification are great ways to keep the attention and promote a thoughtful learning process.

Voyage Life Skills Course has created a sound curriculum that does both.  The lessons in each ‘voyage’ require the student to consider the concepts in each short lesson and then respond by answering the online questions.  There are always tips and prompts to help if the student gets stuck with how to answer something.
