5 Reasons Teens Need to improve High school writing skills

It’s true! Focussing on writing skills will result in succes later in life. It also leads to:

  • Getting better grades overall
  • Expanded vocabulary
  • Knowing and understanding the Rules of Grammar
  • Learning how to perform responsible research
  • Standing Out Amongst Your Peers

As a high schooler, I didn’t get this, but I do now… It’s harsh but true. The world will scrutinize your communication skills. In our digital era of texts and emails, the ability to write well is an indicator of one’s ability to formulate and articulate ideas in an understandable manner appropriate for the audience. Committing to developing core writing skills in your homeschool will empower your family to reap the benefits later on.

Writing Skills: Do you Know Where to begin?

Most kids don’t just wake up one-morning having well-organized ideas that are communicated in a descriptive manner that engages the reader to the end.  Quality writing skills begin by learning about structure and organization. But don’t forget creativity & fun! Expressing ideas with clarity comes with exercising creativity every day.

There are so many types of writing to explore and learn about. A good writing curriculum is going to cover a variety of writing types as well as provide opportunities to learn how to edit and improve writing by adding creativity and clarity.

Here’s a quick reminder of the different types of writing. I know I take so many of them for granted. However, when I stop and think about each of them, I realize it really is important that our high school writing lesson teach each of these.

Writing Skills for Life & Work

Resumes/CV’s, cover letters, and social media profiles.  These types of writing are so important that I’ve put them first. Because a well-written resume, cover letter, and social media profile will show a potential employer the writer’s skill and personality. It’s a perfect place to let writing skills shine.

Communication via email, text, memo and formal letter along with business plans (for those entrepreneurial teens) are learned skills of organization and articulation that will show teamwork, critical thinking skills, and adaptability. And don’t forget online work!

Creating web pages, blog posts, presentations, and conducting research should also be included in what our homeschoolers learn. These are vital when it comes to success in life in our digital age. High school writing skills show up in every aspect of life and work proving the importance of investing in a quality writing curriculum for your homeschool.

Writing really is a life skill. No matter what your passion or profession – dog walker to website designer, college professor to genetic researcher and beyond. High school writing skills are the foundation on which to build success for future endeavors.

Self-paced Writing Skills curriculum for 6th-12th grades

I recently began using the WriteShop I & II video course for high school writing with my teens. It has been such a refreshing and empowering choice for our family.  The short but very effective online videos that accompany each unit explain the lessons so well. My middle schooler has recently been put off by writing because it was getting boring.  This new resource has unleashed his creativity that has been just under surface but somewhat ignored.

I love the flexibility of the videos. He can do the lesson on his own, or we can watch it together. Completing the daily workbook exercises is easily understood without hours of planning for me to ensure I cover all the topics in the right order and to the appropriate level.

I needed better High school Writing tools

I know that middle school and high school writing skills should increase with each stage of a student’s learning. Unfortunately, I’ve caught myself making leaps into areas that my son was just not ready for yet. Bottom line? I needed better tools to make the daily steps just challenging enough and enjoyable for him while ensuring we ‘covered our bases in the correct order.

Here’s why we are really enjoying in Writeshop I and can’t wait to jump into Write Shop II

  • Because the video access never expires, we can use them as long as needed.
  • The workbooks and videos contain clear instructions, colorful graphics, and practical examples that keep teen’s attention and encourage independence.
  • The videos correspond seamlessly with the latest 5th edition (and still work with older editions too).
  • My son enjoys the fun examples and the fact that there is lots of humor
  • I love that the writing topics are relevant for today’s teens
  • Learning to use the self-editing tips has been a life-saver eliminating frustration and wasted time for both of us.

I’m pretty sure you are going to like WriteShop I & II too.
