Wrecked By Thankfulness: Promises Kept?

Read Part 1 of Wrecked by Thankfulness: The journey makes the destination worth it. Find out how our community wrecked me before reading about promises kept.

Thankful God Keeps His Promise.

The business had been lost in the economic crisis of 2008, We were tired, we were broke. We began to think outside the box. To dream. To seek God.

One day, in September 2011, my husband came to me and said, “ You know how we’ve always wanted to live and raise the kids in Europe?  Well, there’s this job opening in Scotland. Do you think I should apply?”

I looked at him, with a toddler at my ankles as I cooked whatever dinner was that night and replied, “Go for it!” Who knows what will happen.” It never hurts to apply, right?.

So he did. It was simple, logical and quite exciting. I was lost in daydreaming at the prospects of life in a different country.  Little did I know what that job application would put in motion.

Promises Kept?

Let me stop here and just say that everything happens for a reason, and none of it is a surprise to God.  I don’t believe for an instant we were ahead of God’s will for us.  I do believe we were not yet fully prepared for the future of living in another country. God had much for us to learn. And God had great things in store. Painful, exhausting, and refining, but all great things that again would prove He is so worthy of our praise and thanksgiving.

My husband went to Scotland for 5 weeks to study. He had interviewed and gotten the job. The last hurdle was to pass the UK licensing exam. It was known to be difficult, but we were confident in my husband’s abilities and subject knowledge.  After he completed studying and taking the test, I flew to Scotland to meet him. We began looking for a place to live, took time to consider our schooling options, and take care of all the necessary items for moving to a different country.

We found out at the end of that last week in Scotland that my husband didn’t pass the licensing test.  Since it was offered again in a few months, he decided to take it again. Again, for rather bizarre reasons, he did not pass.

This time he was devastated, to the point of a near nervous breakdown.  We were angry, hurt and questioning God’s will. All were natural responses to disappointment. Then the kids got really sick. Isn’t that how it goes? When things are the most stressful, someone gets ill.

Simply put, we had to press in even closer to God for direction, comfort, and provision even when we didn’t feel like the promises had been kept.
